One of my greatest joys is being the K4 Teacher at St. Peter’s Catholic School. St. Peter’s has the distinct ability to provide a safe, nurturing environment specially designed for learning. Where individuality is recognized and diversity is respected. Our teachers and administration provide instruction based on a child’s cognitive, physical, social and moral potential. Instruction is stimulating and developmentally appropriate and presents a strong foundation for success. As Christians we are called to give, help those in need, and love and the students at St. Peter’s Catholic School are truly loved.

The best thing my parents ever did for me was to send me to Catholic schools.  My parents made tremendous sacrifices to send my 4 siblings and me to Catholic schools, because they believed in the value of a Catholic education.  Religion and prayer were so important in our household, and remains that way in my family.

 My husband, George, and I married 21 years ago in the Catholic Church.  George converted to Catholicism knowing how much it meant to bring our children up in the Catholic faith.  Our son and daughter both attend Cardinal Newman School. 

 It has always been a lifelong dream for me to teach in a Catholic School, and I feel very blessed to be the Kindergarten teacher at St. Peter’s Catholic School.  From the moment you step into our school, you can feel the warmth and love of not only our administration, teachers and staff, but you feel it from our students and their families.  We are one family here at St. Peter’s intertwined by the beauty of diversity and faith; we are truly a celebration of God’s love.

My reason for being here so long is the children. I have watched them grow in love and faith through the years. It brings me so much joy when graduates come back to visit, write and call me. Regina Martin Spell thrives in the Catholic School environment. More than half of my Catholic School teaching has been at St. Peter’s Catholic School. The commitment of the families to provide their children with a faith filled education, nourishes my vocation as a Catholic School Educator. The students’ desire to learn about God and the faith makes the teaching rewarding.

I am a product of a large Ohio Catholic family, who support the development of my faith. I enturn try to support the faith of my husband’s three children and the children and families of St. Peter’s School. My husband J. Everett Spell is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Columbia College. Columbia College is local Methodist College. Everett also supports my faith as I do his. This ecumenical relationship of our faiths has made me a stronger Christian and hopefully a better model for our children at St.Peter’s School.

Being relatively new to South Carolina, my association with St.
Peter’s School is a significant part of my life. My favorite thing about St. Peter’s Catholic School is the St. Peter’s families. Our community is special for a number of reasons. First, the families are diverse, and this creates an atmosphere that fosters tolerance and understanding. Second, the students’ parents are warm, friendly, and extremely supportive. Third, and most dear to my heart, the children make St. Peter’s Catholic School special. They are bright, inquisitive, and enthusiastic. It is an honor and a pleasure to spend my days with them.

I am originally from Honduras and have lived in the United States, first in Los Angeles and now in Columbia, for the past 25 years.  I have been a member of the St. Peter’s Faculty since 2007 where I teach Spanish to all grade levels.  I greatly appreciate the love, care and kind hearts of our students, parents, teachers and parishioners; we are truly a family!  Todos somos familia!  Gracias!

As the St. Peter’s librarian, I strive to have a warm and inviting environment for reading. I want to motivate the students to read more and to have a real love for literature. I enjoy bringing the stories to life using songs, props, and movement. Knowledge is endless when library skills are sharpened. The library should be a place of excitement, imagination, peace, and discovery. My goal is to bring these elements to the library at St. Peter’s School. I have been blessed with one of the best job in the world!

High notes from our Capella Pueri

Imagine being in grade school and making your singing debut with a major regional symphony orchestra. Sound too good to be true? Our Capella Pueri (which is Latin for “Children’s Choir”) made their debut singing a major musical masterpiece — the “Requiem”of turn-of-century French composer Gabriel Fauré — in November of 2008 with members of the South Carolina Philharmonic. The Mass was sung to commemorate All Souls Day. Choristers were auditioned exclusively from students at Saint Peter’s School, committed to a strict rehearsal schedule, and sang two back-to-back Sunday Masses.  This Requiem was also sung the following April at the Funeral Mass of beloved Guardian Grand, Sondra Yates.

This year’s Capella has distilled to ten select choristers who sing their lively faith with a truly joyful sound. The year’s repertory is an impressive “who’s who” in the finest classical and contemporary composers: Bach, Pergolesi, Mozart, Billings, Rutter, as well as beloved Spirituals. These choristers have become equally comfortable singing in Latin as well as English. As a sweet ending to the school year, Miss Rosemary MacIntosh, whose mother attended Saint Peter’s when it was a boarding school staffed by the Ursuline Sisters, made a bequest giving each chorister a $50 award for their dedication and commitment to the Capella. “The Capella, in their blue choir robes at Monday Mass, is one of the most visible groups in our school,” said Mr. Husey. “I think when people come to that Mass, and see and hear them lead our entire school in song, they’ll know we’re up to something special.”
