Feed Your Mind
Library Reading Program
Goal: To encourage Reading
I am excited about our new reading incentive program. Feed Your Mind will be an ongoing program to encourage a love for reading. The children will be given two options to gain “points” for reading.
The first option is the Accelerated Reading Program that is already established at St. Peters. The library has a selection of books that are marked “Accelerated Reader”. These books have a computerized test the students may take. Depending on the level book and the correct answers, the students gain points.
To encourage more interest and make available a larger selection of books, the second option involves Non-Accelerated Reader books. This means your child can read anything of interest; fiction, nonfiction, periodicals, reference, newspapers, graphic novels, even cookbooks. To gain points for these books, your child will be given book report options. Some ideas may be creating a new book cover, making a model, dressing up as a character or giving an oral presentation. A list of book report options will be given each quarter for your child to choose from. The possibilities are endless! It will be up to your child to use his or her creativity. Obviously, the more they put into it the more points he or she will earn.
As if this wasn’t fun enough, here is where the real excitement begins! Each quarter the children with enough points earned will receive an invitation to the Feed Your Mind Café. We will have various menu items worth different amounts. The points earned will enable your child to pick and choose what he or she can afford on the menu. For example, under “appetizer” your child may choose a cool pencil or silly band. The “main course” may be more appealing with a slice of pizza or a fruit kabob. Of course your child may be eyeing the banana split in the “dessert” section. There will be a variety of food and non-food items available for selection. And yes, they can earn enough points where they could choose several of the items on the menu.
We will keep a record of their points on authentic café order tickets. The great thing about the Feed Your Mind Café is that it will close quarterly, clean up and re-open for business each quarter. If your child missed the Cafe’ opening the first quarter then encourage them to read, take AR tests and/or do cool reading projects in the next quarter and they too will have the opportunity to reserve their seat at the next quarterly Feed Your Mind Café opening.
Now that is food for thought !! Bon Appétit !
